An important museum about the rich and dramatic history of Poland. Very interesting inside. If you are in Warsaw, not to be missed.

The Royal Castle in Warsaw was a seat of the Sejm and Senate of the first Rzeczpospolita and also an official residence of the monarchs in Warsaw. It contained the offices of a number of political institutions, arranged around a central courtyard.

The castle is a symbol of Polish statehood and history. Its origins date back almost seven centuries and the design of its present structure has evolved in stages since the fourteenth century. (The actual structure is a mid-20th-century reconstruction of the original castle, which was mostly demolished by hostile foreigners during WWII.)

Today, the Royal Łazienki Residence fulfils functions of a museum and the garden, being visited by a throng of tourists from the country and the entire world, at the same time serving as a splendid promoter of culture. The park is not only a must see venue for the tourists, but also the favorite Sunday destination for the Varsovians.

While the exterior has been recreated, the interior of the Royal Castle is surprisingly authentic. Furniture that was saved from destruction, or replacements from the same period, serve to illustrate the uses of the castle’s rooms.

The castle’s main function today is as a museum, mostly to itself, and you can see reconstructions of the Royal Apartments, including a throne room and royal chapel, and rooms from its days as the Houses of Parliament. It’s also where many of Poland’s art treasures are displayed.
