The open-air museum of Seurasaari is located on a beautiful green island just a few kilometres from the heart of Helsinki. The island is a tranquil oasis in the midst of the city and at the museum the traditional Finnish way of life is displayed in the cottages, farmsteads and manors of the past four centuries that have been relocated from all around Finland.

Seurasaari Open-Air Museum was founded in 1909 by Axel Olai Heikel, a professor in Helsinki University. He also worked as a custodian in the museum until his death. All the buildings in the museum were transported to the island during the 20th century – at the moment there are 87 buildings in total in the museum representing traditional vernacular building techniques. The visitors may enter into the old times by popping in the houses and observing or joining the events organized on the island. The museum situated by the most beautiful nature offers the visitors an opportunity to live the old culture for real. The surroundings on their behalf provide the ideal setting for a most beautiful summer day.

The museum also includes a country shop and several farmhouses and smaller cottages such as the Kurssi and Ivars houses from Ostrobothnia, the Selkämä house from eastern Finland, the Halla house from northeastern Finland, and the Pertinotsa house from Karelia.
